While sitting in the congregation of the Worldwide Church of God under Herbert Armstrong and as this age draws to a close, Christians seek to understand the Signs of the Times, regarding our Lord's return, the topic of "Antichrist" is on the lips of many. Throughout the Evangelical world we are being told to expect the coming of some GREAT SUPERMAN, some dreadful world dictator who will combine all the WORST characteristics of Hitler and Stalin.
They would have us to believe that this "person" will rule the world during what they call the "great Tribulation" after the "Secret Rapture" has taken place. Since the word "anti-christ" is found only four times in our Bible, all of these references being in the Epistles of John, and since it is never prefixed by the world "the" we must examine the Scriptures to see just exactly who or what "Antichrist" really is. In our study we will find Anti-Christ spoken of in Daniel's prophecy under the symbol of a "little horn", in the 13th chapter of Revelation as a "beast" and in Paul's second Epistle to the Thessalonians as "the man of sin".
Whilst space will prevent us reproducing every Scripture in detail, we shall give the necessary references and will show from these passages from God's Word eighteen marks which, confirmed by history, show that Anti-Christ refers not to one man who shall appear at the end of this age but to the entire dynasty of Popes right up to and including the present Pope, John Paul II. Some of our readers will no doubt be shocked by such a claim, and yet if nineteen prophecies bear witness against this system surely this should be sufficient to identify and convict for even under the law of God only two witnesses were required.
1.ANTI-CHRIST WILL ARISE FROM THE RUINS OF THE ROMAN
EMPIRE,BUT BE DIVERSE FROM THE OTHER 10 KINGDOMS WHICH EMERGE Daniel
7:1-8.
In this prophecy we are given a vision of four great beasts symbolising four
great world Empires that would exist from the time of Daniel. These empires
were:-
(a) A lion with eagle's wings - Babylon.
(b) A bear - Medo-Persia.
(c) A leopard - Greece.
(d) A dreadful and more terrible beast - Rome.
When this fourth and final beast which represented the Roman Empire finally
passed away in 476 A.D. with the deposing of the boy Emperor Augustulus, there
arose within its territory ten horns or lesser kingdoms. These were:-
1. Franks 6. Vandals
2. Burgundians 7. Visigoths
3. Alemanni 8. Ostrogoths
4. Suevi 9. Bavarians
5. Alans 10. Lombards
It was in the midst of these ten horns or kingdoms that there arose another
"little horn" or kingdom which was different from all the rest. History confirms
to us that it was within the territory occupied by those ten kingdoms that the
Papacy, a kingdom not merely temporal but claiming to be spiritual, arose and
consolidated its power during what have been well named by historians "the dark
ages".
2.THE LITTLE HORN (ANTI-CHRIST) TO PLUCK UP THREE OTHER HORNS Daniel
7 v 8.
History records that in order to have a physical and geographical area in
which to organise its kingdom and set up its headquarters, the Papacy waged war
upon and conquered or plucked up by the roots, three of the ten kingdoms. These
three were :-
1. Vandals
2. Ostrogoths
3. Lombards
In the first case the Pope appealed for help to the Eastern Emperor
Justinian, who sent his most able general, Belisarius and decisively defeated
the Vandals in 533 A.D. Belisarius and his successor Narses waged war upon the
Ostrogoths for another twenty years and in 553 A.D. they too were defeated or
plucked up by the roots. Some two centuries later the Frankish King Pipin,
acting at the behest of the Papacy deposed the Lombard King Aistulf and handed
over his territories to the Roman Church.
Later an attempted revolt by the Lombards was put down by Pipin's son
Charlemagne at the request of Pope Hadrian in 774 A.D. and with the death of the
Lombard leader Desidirius the third horn or kingdom was finally uprooted and so
the Papal States had come into being with the Bishop of Rome as their King.
3.ANTI-CHRIST TO HAVE POWER TO REVIVE THE FIRST BEAST (ROMAN
EMPIRE) Revelation 13 v 3&12.
Subsequent to the conversion of the Roman Emperor Constantine, and the
adoption of Christianity as the state religion, the church began to be
reorganised along the lines of the Empire. The Bishops began to be graded
according to the importance of their cities within the Empire, and this was
ultimately to lead to the Bishop of Rome being regarded as the chief Bishop of
all Christendom. In fact the church began to be a shadow of the whole Imperial
system, so that when that system collapsed in 476 A.D. the church and its chief
Bishop were ready to step into the vacuum this created. This situation whereby
the popes were able to assume the Imperial powers was aided by a number of
historical events both before and after the fall of the Empire.
(a) In 378 A.D. Demasus the Bishop of Rome assumed the title of Pontifex
Maximus or Supreme Pontiff formerly held by the Roman emperor and dating back to
the mystery religion of ancient Babylon.
(b) In 378/79 by the Edicts of the Roman Emperors Gratian and Theodosius, the
Bishop of Rome was empowered with legal jurisdiction over all the clergy of the
West.
(c) In 445 A.D. by the Edict of the Emperors Valentinian and Theodosius I1,
the Bishop of Rome was declared to be: "Director of all Christendom" and all
clergy were commanded to obey him as ruler.
(d) In 529 A.D. the Imperial Code of Justinian confirmed Papal supremacy.
(e) In 533 A.D. the so-called Decretal Letter of this same Emperor Justinian
solemnly recognised the Pope as "head of all the churches".
(f) In 606 A.D. the Eastern Emperor Phocas constituted Pope Boniface I I I as
the Universal Bishop and Head of Christendom.
In addition to these important milestones on the Papal road to Imperial
power, are the false Decretals of lsadore, and the alleged Donation of
Constantine which claim that the Emperor Constantine on leaving Rome for his new
capital city of Constantinople left the continuance of the secular government in
the hands of the Pope and his successors, who were to exercise dominion over
Italy and Western Europe and to enjoy all the privileges and dignities enjoyed
by the Emperor and his Senate.
It thus becomes clear, how, true to the prophecy, the Papal Antichrist, as it
were, revived in its own system the old Roman Empire which had apparently been
wounded unto death.
4.THE LITTLE HORN (ANTI-CHRIST) TO HAVE EYES LIKE THE EYES OF
A MAN Daniel 7 v 8.
Now this particular mark of identification has been much misused and
misunderstood by those who follow the FUTURIST school of prophecy, as we were in
Worldwide; in order to paint a highly imaginative picture of what is to happen
in the future. They have told us that the coming one man Antichrist will by the
use of highly developed technology, and the use of television be enabled to
switch on and look into the home of any person, anywhere, at any time during the
period of the "great tribulations". However, the real explanation of these
verses is MUCH MORE PLAIN.
In the original, the idea conveyed by the expression "eyes like the eyes of a
man" was that of eyes which look over something in the sense of an overseer. An
overseer is of course in the spiritual realm a bishop, and does not the Pope of
Rome claim to be the chief Bishop or chief overseer in direct succession from
the Apostle Peter? Do not the priests of the Roman Church by way of the
confessional have the power to see into the most intimate details of the lives
of every member of their flock? In fact by this same system of spying and prying
even the top secrets of government have in the past been obtained by the Roman
Hierarchy.
There can be no doubt therefore that the Holy Spirit could not have been more
accurate when he inspired the prophet Daniel to described the Papal system as
having "eyes like the eyes of a man".
5.ANTI-CHRIST TO BLASPHEME AND SPEAK WORDS AGAINST THE GOD OF HEAVEN
Daniel 7 v 25 Revelation 13 v 6.
The first reaction of many modern Christians will no doubt be that such a
description could not possibly apply to the Pope who is surely a man of God,
devoting his life to the service of Christ. Since blasphemy is the taking away
for oneself the dignities and attributes of God, as well as openly speaking
against Him, I feel that a few quotations will serve to prove this point.
(a) When the Papal Tiara is placed upon the head of a new Pope the following
words are said:-
"Receive this triple crown and know that thou art the father of Princes and
the King and ruler of the world."
(b) The following words were addressed by one of the Cardinals to Pope
Innocent X on the occasion of his coronation:-
"Most Holy and blessed father, head of the church, ruler of the world, to
whom the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven are committed, whom the angels in heaven
adore, and the gates of hell fear, and all the world adores, we especially
venerate, worship and adore thee."
(c) If the above are not blasphemous enough let the Popes speak for
themselves. Pope Boniface says in the Bull Unam Sanctam:-
"The Roman Pontiff judges all men but is judged by none... we declare assert
and pronounce to be subject to the Roman Pontiff is to every creature,
altogether necessary for salvation
. . . I have the authority of the King of Kings. I am all in all and above
all, so that God Himself and I, the Vicar, of God, have but one consistory, and
I am able to do almost all that God can do. What therefore can you make of me
but God."
(d) Pope Pius X:-
"The Pope is not only the representative of Jesus Christ, but he is Jesus
Christ under the veil of the flesh. Does the Pope speak? It is Jesus Christ who
speaks. Does the Pope accord a favour or pronounce a curse? It is Jesus Christ
who pronounces the curse or accords the favour. So when the Pope speaks, we have
no business to examine. We have only to obey. We have no right to criticise his
decisions or discuss his commands. Therefore everyone who would wear the crown,
ought to submit himself to Divine Right."
(e) The Bishop of Bayloone in 1896 described the Pope as:"The visible
personification of the Spirit of God."
(f) In 1949 the Irish Roman Catholic Bishops sent a letter to the Pope to
congratulate him on his Golden Jubilee of his ordination as a priest. Let us
look at how they describe him:"We the Archbishops and Bishops of Ireland
prostrate at the feet of your Holiness..... our thoughts go back to that great
event fifty years ago when your Holiness was taken from amongst men . . . and
became A MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MEN - ANOTHER CHRIST."
Lest any should think that a wind of change in the Vatican has made such
blasphemy a thing of the past we have but to recall the Irish Roman Catholic
faithful who during the recent Papal visit sang in praise of their Pontiff "He's
got the whole world in his hands."
6.ANTI-CHRIST TO DECEIVE MANY BY FALSE SIGNS AND LYING WONDERS
Revelation l3 v l3.
Little needs to be said to illustrate the false miracles and
lying wonders of Rome, the shrines, the relics and all the
superstition that accompanies these. Most of our readers will be acquainted with
the so-called miraculous shrines at Lourdes (France) and Walshingham (England),
Fatima (Portugal) and Knock (Ireland) where even today in 1981 Rome still claims
that miracles may be obtained by the power of
the Virgin Mary whose apparition they claim was
seen at these places.
It is common knowledge that Rome possesses enough pieces of the "True cross"
to build a VERITABLE NOAH'S ARK FROM THE WOOD, and then there are the "bleeding
bones" the household utensils and pieces of clothing supposedly identified with
the Holy Family and the Saints. During a recent visit to the South of Italy, the
author saw many of these supposed relics and shrines for himself including a
"bleeding bone" at Amalfi which if it liquifies once a year will prevent
earthquake activity. The author also visited the so-called "Holy Stairs" in Rome
where there are still a constant stream of benighted pilgrims, crawling up on
bended knee to earn a reduction in the time they will have to stay in a mythical
purgatory. Much money is made from such superstition, and pilgrims reaching the
top of the Holy Stairs put their money through an iron grill at the top. We
could also make mention of the so-called Holy House of Lorretto, which Rome
claims was the home of the Virgin Mary at Nazareth and was transported by angels
through the sky to its present location in Italy. There is also the "Bank of
Saint Antony" where the pilgrim may buy 'a share coupon' bearing the following
inscription:-
"coupon for X francs, payable here below in cash, and repayable in heaven at
the Bank of Saint Antony."
Any system which would so exploit the credibility of its faithful by such
lying wonders well deserves the description of "Antichrist."
7.ANTI-CHRIST TO HAVE POWER TO PERSECUTE THE SAINTS FOR "31/2
TIMES" OR "42 MONTHS" Daniel 8 v 25 Revelation 13 v 5.
First let us say that there can be no doubt as to the persecuting spirit of
the Papacy. This is indeed the system which formed and operated the bloody
Inquisition, this is the system which celebrated the massacre of St.
Bartholomew's Day, lit the martyr fires of Smithfield and attempted the genocide
of Irish Protestants in 1641. For the benefit of our readers we will list a few
of Rome's most infamous acts of persecution.
(a) 1208 - Tens of thousands of Albigenses (French Protestants) massacred.
(b) 1237 - 1342 - Tens of thousands of Vaudois (early Italian Reformers)
hunted down and killed.
(c) 1421 - Thousands of Hussites slaughtered in Bohemia.
(d) 1488 - In Piedmont 3000 Vaudois were burnt and suffocated to death in one
case alone.
(e) 1546 - Emperor Charles V caused 50,000 Flemish and German Protestants to
be hanged, burned alive and buried alive.
(f) 1555 - 58 - 300 Protestants burned alive in England by Bloody Mary.
(9) 1572 - Massacre of St. Batholomew's Day - 60,000 French Protestants
slain.
(h) 1631 - 29,000 Protestants slain at Magedeburg in Germany.
(i) 1641 - 100,000 Irish Protestants tortured and murdered in the "war of
religion" declared by the Irish R.C. Bishops,
(j) 1685 - 400,000 French Protestants killed in the years following the
Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
This does not even scrape the surface of Rome's infamous brutality, and some
have estimated that millions of martyrs have perished at her hands.
We have but the space of this small booklet to look at one of the
above-listed massacres, that of the Albigenses. Some 300,000 Roman Catholic
soldiers, each decorated with the Holy Cross invaded the area of Languedoc where
the unfortunate Albigenses resided. At the head of this army was Dominic, later
canonized as a Saint of the Roman Church and Almaric the Papal Legate. Entering
the city of Beziers the order was given to slay every citizen, and when it was
pointed out that some Roman Catholics might be amongst this number, the Papal
Legate declared: "Kill them all, man, woman and child, the Lord will know His
own."
Some 60,000 are estimated to have perished. At another city, Foix, men, women
and children all ages, were butchered by the Papal armies and above the shrieks
of the women, and the moans of the dying, the voices of the priests of Rome
could be heard chanting:- "Come, Holy Ghost."'
Dear readers, ask yourselves the question: - Has there been any decree from
the Pope down the centuries, repenting of these persecutions, these bloody
murders and tortures of millions of saintly believers? No, indeed! you have
never heard one sentence of repentance from priest, bishop, cardinal or Pope.
Lest you should think there has been a change of heart you have but to look at
events in the Roman Catholic State of Croatia from 1941 to 44 or the reign of
terror during the last decade in Northern lreland
(by the Roman Catholic I. R.A.) to see that Rome is still the same system so
aptly described in Revelation 17 as being:-
"drunken with the blood of the saints and martyrs of Jesus."
Now let us look at the time factor involved, that of "time, time and half a
time" or "42 months" during which the Papacy would have power to persecute the
people of God. In Bible chronology "a time" represents 360 days. On the basis of
Ezekiel 4 v 6 we see that each prophetic day can be taken to represent one year,
and a time represents 360 prophetic "year-days". Therefore "time times (2 times)
and half a time must in fact be a period of 12 prophetic year-days -
(360 + 360 + 360 + 180 = 1260). Likewise 42 prophetic months of 30 days are
equal to the same time span 1260 year-days. Now if we measure a period of 1260
years from certain major dates which mark the growth and development of the
Papal System we shall see that the persecuting "little horn" of Daniel, and the
"beast" of Revelation 13 are one and the same system - the Papacy

Kingdom of Italy. The Pope loses his Temporal Power and becomes the "prisoner of
the Vatican". Decree of Papal Infallibility.
Thus the time factor involved in the persecution of the saints by Anti-Christ
fits exactly into the above four prophetic time measures, serving to brand the
Papacy as the self-same Anti-Christ.
8.ANTI-CHRIST TO CHANGE TIMES AND LAWS Daniel 7 v 25. We all
know that it is the sole prerogative of Almighty God to ordain and to change
times for He is the only law maker in His own universe. However, in this respect
also the Popes of Rome have disregarded God and sought to put their decrees
above His commands, thereby identifying themselves yet again as the
prophesied Anti-Christ. Let Pope Nicholas speak for himself.-
"Wherefore no marvel if it be in my power to change time and
times, to alter and abrogate laws, to dispense with all things, yea with the
precepts of Christ."
Such words of a Roman Pontiff have been fully endorsed by actions as well,
and we shall now look at some examples.
(a) The Lord's Day - The word of God explicitly teaches us in the Fourth
Commandment that the Sabbath Day is to be kept Holy and set aside for rest and
for the worship of Almighty God. However the Church of Rome changes this clear
command and teaches instead:-
"There is no Divine command about Sunday work. The "3rd" commandment (note
the change) is concerned with the Jewish Sabbath; unlike other commandments it
is not a Divine statement." (The Catholic Herald 3.9.54).
(b) The Feast Days - The only religious Feast Days outside of the Sabbath
known to the early church, were the festivals of Christian Passover, Pentecost,
and Tabernacles which Feasts pointed to the ministry of our Lord as the Saviour,
Baptizer and Coming King. However, the Papacy soon substituted a series of Feast
Days of its own making. So today we find that the entire month of May has been
dedicated to the Virgin Mary and by the decree of Pope Pius IX the month of
October has been dedicated to the Rosary. During the month of June Rome
celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi, commemorating the blasphemous fable of
Transubstantiation whilst on August 15th they celebrate the supposed Assumption
of the Virgin Mary into Heaven. These are but the tip of the iceberg and the
many and various Saints' Days, proclaimed by the Popes of Rome are too numerous
to list in detail.
So we see the pretender in the Vatican changing times and seasons at will,
setting aside the commands of God, and substituting his own, even to the extent
of changing the entire calender as Pope Gregory Xlll did when he put the clock
of history ahead by ten days, not to mention the fixing of dates for Christmas
and Easter.
9.ANTI-CHRIST TO HAVE THE TWO HORNS OF A LAMB BUT
SPEAK LIKE A DRAGON. Revelation l3 v ll.
The scripture in question speaking of one who appears as a lamb yet speaks as
a dragon reminds us of two very important warnings given us in the New
Testament. Firstly our Lord himself said:"Beware of false prophets, which come
to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening
wolves." Matthew 7 v 15. Secondly the Apostle Paul stated:- "After my departing
shall grievous wolves come among you, not sparing the flock." Acts 20v 29.
This description refers to the Papal Hierarchy of Cardinals, Bishops etc.,
who are divided into two groups
(a) secular clergy or priests
(b) regular clergy or monks are symbolised by the horns of a lamb.
It is interesting to note that the ancient mitre of the Roman Bishops had two
points rising to the left and right like horns and was known as the "Goruti" or
"horned ones". It is also of interest to note that ever since the reign of Pope
Gregory, the Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops of Rome when taking their vow of
obedience to the Pope are invested with the "pallium" a strip of Lamb's wool
adorned with crosses. So we see just how appropriate the symbol of a horned lamb
is when describing the Papal Hierarchy. Yet in spite of its innocent appearance
the dragon-like words of Popery can be seen in statements like the
following:"The church tolerates heretics when she is obliged to do so, but she
hates them with a deadly hatred, and uses all her power to annihilate them. If
Catholics in this country should become a considerable majority, then will
religious freedom come to an end." Archbishop Ryan 191 1. "The Catholic Church
has the right and duty to kill heretics . . . the only thing to do is to put
them to death."
Father de Luca S.J. Professor of Canon Law 1909 (The book containing these
words were personally commanded by Pope Leo XI I 1). "The moment any man
professes heresy he can justly be slain." Cardinal Lepicier 1910
"We Catholics until now have worked for Catholicism with the Cross and the
Book of the Mass. The day has come . . . to work with the gun." "Father" Mogus
1942 Croatia"it is no longer a sin to kill a child of seven."
Father Juric 1942 Croatia "Adolf Hitler is the envoy of God." Cardinal
Stepinac 1941 "All heretics, schismatics and rebels against our Lord the Pope I
will persecute and attack to the utmost of my power."
The oath of every R.C. bishop literally translated from the Roman Pontificial
Chief Service Book.
It is little wonder that Rome itself chose as the banner of the Inquisition,
a lamb with a flaming taper in its mouth for truly this Papal lamb speaks the
words of a dragon and is Anti-Christ indeed.
l0.ANTI-CHRIST TO FORCE ALL UNDER HIS AUTHORITY TO RECEIVE A
MARK IN ORDER TO BUY OR SELL. Revelation 13 v 16 & 17.
The word mark here as used in the original Greek means to engrave so as to
indicate that the person who receives the mark is the property of the one who
engraves it upon him. In fact in the days when John wrote it was the custom for
slaves to be marked in the right hand or forehead usually by burning. The verses
in question show that all ranks of society would be enslaved to this system, and
the right hand mentioned in the text refers to the manual worker whilst the
forehead signifies the earning of a living by the intellect.
Now what exactly was this mark which the slaves of the Antichrist system were
to receive and be stamped with. We are told that the mark is the name of the
beast and we know that history has declared this beast system of the Papacy to
be the Latin Kingdom. The one emblem above all others which symbolises that
Kingdom is the Latin Cross, and we will find that this emblem is stamped upon
the poor dupes of Popery from the cradle to the grave.
At baptism the priest makes the sign of the cross with his thumb on the
forehead of the baby and says:-
"I sign thee with the sign of the cross, and confirm thee with the chrism of
salvation."
So much for the Latin mark in the forehead but what of the right hand. The
answer can be found in examining the rites associated with the ordination of the
priests of Rome.
The Rubric states:-
"They that are to be ordained successively kneeling one by one before him, he
anoints with the catechumenal oil, both the hand joined together of each one in
the form of a cross thus - he draws his right hand thumb . . . two lines on the
joined hands, namely from the thumb of the right hand to the forefinger of the
left hand and from the thumb of the left hand to the forefinger of the right."
He then:-
"draws with his right hand the sign of the cross upon the hands of him whom
he ordains."
This anointing of the hands with the sign of the Cross is an essential part
of the ordination of Roman priests. It is necessary also to say that the Latin
Cross is found in all other parts of the Papal system as well. The church
prayers are interspersed with the magic sign, it adorns the priestly vestments,
the church furniture and architecture, whilst the idol itself, the Latin Cross,
is to be given according to Rome, the highest form of their worship, that known
as Latria, and generally given only to God Almighty. The veneration of the Latin
Cross is not Christian, but has its origins in the ancient Chaldean mysteries
like so many other Papal errors. It was there in Babylon that this same "mark of
the beast" was made on the foreheads of all those initiated into the Babylonish
creed, and it decked the vestments of their priests. It was worn on a chain
around the necks of the Vestal Virgins in Pagan Rome, and worshipped in both
Egypt and Babylon as the Crux Ansata, the sign of life. Thus history yet again
serves to explain prophecy and identifies the Anti-Christ mark.
Now when the Papacy was at the height of its power and prestige it was
impossible to carry on the normal everyday existence, even to buying or selling,
if one was outside the system of Rome and had not got the mark. In 1179 the
Lateran Council commanded that no man "exercise traffic with heretics" and so
Protestants were driven from the markets and towns. In 1184 Pope Alexander Ill
passed another law forbidding commerce with the Waldenses and Albigenses. A
similar decree was passed again in 1414 at the Council of Constance. How
terrible must the boycotts have been which resulted from these decrees for those
who refused the mark.
They were even denied a decent burial according to the decree Quicurque
Hierecticos. Such boycotting tactics have continued to the present day wherever
the Papacy holds sway as was seen not long ago in the Irish Republic when such a
boycott was applied to the Protestants of the little town of Fetard-on-Sea.
11 ANTI-CHRIST TO BE IDENTIFIED BY A NUMBER -
666 Revelation 13 v 18. Long before figures were invented it was the
custom to represent numbers by letters of the alphabet. In the process of time
mystical numbers came to be given to the heathen god, and their devotees wore
their numbers inscribed on amulets. Now in the case of the Anti-Christ, this
Beast who bears the number 666 what is the name or title which this mystical
