THE PLACE OF SAFETY final part
The name Engedi means "the spring of the wild goats" or gazelles, a name given to the spot from the vast, numbers of ibexes which inhabit these cliffs on the western side of the Dead Sea. "On all sides the country is full of caverns, which might then serve as lurking places for David and his men" (Jamieson, Fausset, Brown Commentary.
The "Rock of Escape" is a cliff in the wilderness near Maon at Wadi el-Malaki, a narrow but deep chasm, impassable except by making a circuit of many miles. Even though Saul might have seen David, he might not have been able to reach him without making a detour of many miles. The Revised Standard Version also translates this passage as "Rock of Escape."
From "The Rock of Escape" David and his band fled to Engedi, on the western side of the Dead Sea. People have travelled past Engedi on their way to the fabled Hebrew fortress Masada, lying in the same region. It was atop this mountainous plateau that a band of stalwart Jews defended themselves from an entire Roman legion during the Bar Kochba rebellion in 132-135 A.D. The Jews held out for many months before the Romans built an inclined roadbed up to the top of the peak, from which their soldiers could attack the heroic defenders. But the Jews atop the fortress, built by king Herod during the previous century, made a pact and committed suicide-every last man, woman and child-rather than fall into the hands of the barbaric Romans.
Engedi, which literally translates as "fountain of a kid," lies on the west shore of the Dead Sea, about 35 miles from Jerusalem, south of the area of the discovery of the "Dead Sea scrolls." It was in one of the caves at Engedi that David was hiding when he cut off the skirt of Saul's robe (I Samuel 24).
Says The New Westminster Dictionary of the Bible: "The fountain, which still bears the name of `En-gedi' is a copious hot spring of fresh water, bursting forth about 300 or 400 feet above the base of a vast cliff, midway between the mouth of the Jordan and the south point of the sea. The hot water created an oasis, rich with semitropical vegetation and celebrated for palms, vineyards, and balsain (Song of Solomon 1: 14; Josephus Antiquities, ix. 1, 2)."
The New Bible Dictionary says of Engedi: "The fertility of the area in the midst of such barren country made it an ideal place for an outlaw, for food and hiding-places were readily available."
Full of rocks and caves, and very fertile, Engedi receives its year around water supply from the one spring which lies about 600 feet above the Dead Sea. Smith in Historical Geography describes it as a place of wonderful fertility, and as most suitable for refuge. The strong hold of David must have been near the water.
The wilderness of Engedi is a very wild region, full of cliffs, rugged mountains, and virtually impassable terrain, to the west of the Dead Sea. Could this be the "wilderness" area to which God will safely conduct His Church when the "abomination of desolation" appears at Jerusalem? Engedi could be an important stop-over point in the church's flight! It lies 35 miles southeast of Jerusalem, and is about one third of the way to Petra!
The Nabateans who built Petra dug thousands of room-size chambers in the rose-coloured limestone mountains that rise steeply from the valley floor of Petra. Perhaps intended for burial chambers, the Bedoul Bedouin people have used them for homes for hundreds of years.
Could this site be the "place of safety" for God's Church? Petra lies 120 miles south of Jerusalem, almost due south of the southern tip of the Dead Sea, and 60 miles north of Aqaba or Eilat.
The caves are very comfortable, and the inhabited ones are kept very clean, with mats on the floor. The people are very peace-loving, friendly and hospitable.
In theory, thousands of people could survive in Petra, if they were provided with enough food and water. The main problem would appear to be food. Of course, with the proper tools, and seed, the desert soil could be irrigated to grow vegetables, wheat, corn, millet, or whatever crops were necessary. Of course, it is also possible that God would provide food for His people supernaturally, as in the days of old when manna rained down from heaven! Whether God would do this, or allow the people to plant and harvest their own crops, however, we do not know.
Petra is a beautiful, rugged, isolated spot far from trade routes and human activity today-almost a forgotten part of the world. In many respects it could make an ideal place of safety, if God intended to use it as such.
Since Petra is located in the extreme southern part of Jordan, not many miles from the Israeli border, it would very probably not be in the path of the invaders from the east who will run Jordan, according to Bible prophecy.
When Jerusalem is surrounded by armies, and God's people flee to the hills and mountains, it seems very probable that they will flee toward the southeast, past Hebron, past the "Rock of Escape," and down to the Dead Sea plain and the region of Engedi. From there, they could continue southward, along the Aravah Valley, which extends all the way to Eilat, on the shore of the Red Sea.
Along this course they would find pools of water deep within the mountains, hidden from the sun, which can remain clean and cold for months! "A good example of this phenomenon are the pools in the Wadi Barak between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Eilat. Thousands of years ago, winter rains caused a river to form. As the water rushed down to the Aravah, the valley that extends from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Eilat, it cut a curved swath in the desert. Over the millennia, as water rushed around this curve once or twice a year, it carved an increasingly deep crevice into the desert's soft chalk surface.
"The Wadi Barak has several unusual features ... The walls of the wadi gorge are not vertical, and at the bottom the gorge widens or slopes. As you follow the curved path of the gorge floor, the gorge's `ceiling' curves over your head. When standing on the floor of the narrow canyon, you can look up and see the ceiling curve downward. At the top the light from the sky pours in. The light, however, unlike water, does not follow the curve of the gorge walls: it travels in a straight line. The bottom of the gorge, therefore, is unlit. The top is narrower than the bottom because as the water rushed downward in the curve, its force widened the curve itself. The gorge floor, though wide, is not flat. Boulders, swept along by the water, dug oblong-shaped holes with curved sides in the floor of the gorge. As the water rushes through the gorge, it collects in these holes to form pools.
"Since the sunlight cannot get to the pools, no algae grow in them and the water does not evaporate very much. The pools of water remain cool, clear and clean, even in the heat of the summer" (Biblical Archaeology Review, July-August 1983).
About 40 miles south of the intersection of the Sodom road and the road to Eilat, the Wadi Barak is easy to find, marked by bits of brush. "Walk up the wadi until you reach the chalk cliffs, at which point the wadi is transformed into a gorge. Follow the gorge and enjoy a cool swim in the clean pools of the desert wilderness. Be sure, however, NEVER to make the trip when there is the slightest possibility of a deadly flash flood, particularly between October and April. And never camp on a wadi floor" (ibid.).
Coming upon this wadi, as one approaches the turn off to Petra, could be a welcome relief to thousands of thirst starved pilgrims, or refugees fleeing to safety! Perhaps here we see one reason Jesus Christ said we should pray that our flight be not in the winter months. The danger of flash floods during the winter is very great. During the rainy season, from mid-October until the end of March, desert dwellers know not to camp in a wadi or "arroyo."
After a rain, a wadi can quickly become a death trap-a raging river, with torrents of water surging through it, drowning any people or flocks caught within its banks. Almost every year flash floods in the Judean desert kill people who didn't keep to high ground. The flood waters can rip out roads, toss boulders aside like tinker toys, as the muddy waters swirl and rush by with a deafening roar.
Petra is approximately 120 miles from Jerusalem, a very long and tiring journey. Engedi is but 30-35 miles from Jerusalem, and may be a logical resting place, or stop-over point on the way to Petra. Certainly, Jesus' admonition that those in Jerusalem and Judea should "flee into the mountains," would imply the mountains of Judea, to the south and cast of Jerusalem. From there it would not be too difficult a journey to go on to Petra.
Is the "flight" of Christians mentioned in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21-the Mount Olivet prophecy-the same event as the "flight" of the Church of God to her place prepared in the wilderness mentioned in Revelation 12?
These Scriptures are speaking about the same type, and similar events. They both address the true disciples of Christ! The time the Church is taken to a place of safety is at the beginning of the final cycle of the Great Tribulation! (write for our free article Great Tribulation) The directions of Jesus to flee Jerusalem were also followed immediately before the first cycle of the Great Tribulation.
Other than these Biblical references, we know of no Scriptures directly specifying a special "place of safety." We know of no Scriptures that suggest various other possible places of safety around the world, or scattered in other nations. Jesus did not mention any such thing, nor did the early apostles; nor any other Biblical writer.
Where, then, is the place of safety?
All the evidence points directly to Petra. David wrote:
"We live within the shadow of the Almighty, sheltered by the God who is above all gods.
This I declare, that he alone is my refuge, my place of SAFETY; he is my God, and I am trusting him. For he rescues you from every trap, and protects you from the fatal plague. He will shield you with his wings! They will shelter you. His faithful promises are your armour. Now you don't need to be afraid of the dark any more, nor fear the dangers of the day; nor dread the plagues of darkness, nor disasters in the morning."
"Though a thousand fall at my side, though ten thousand are dying around me, the evil will not touch me. I will see how the wicked are punished but I will not share it. For Jehovah is my refuge! I choose the God above all gods to shelter me. How then can evil overtake me or any plague come near? For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will steady you with their hands to keep you from stumbling against the rocks on the trail. You can safely meet a lion or step on poisonous snakes, yes, even trample them beneath your feet!"
"For the Lord says, `Because he loves me, I will RESCUE him; I will make him great because he trusts in my name. When he calls on me I will answer; I will be with him in trouble, and rescue him and honour him. I will satisfy him with a full life and give him my salvation" (Psalm 91:1-16).
This Psalm of David almost seems as if it is written expressly for those who are fleeing for their lives-and describes the world around them going up in flames, even as they move out of impending destruction and horror, and climb rugged mountainous trails to a final place of refuge and safety!
This very Psalm may have been in David's mind, and on his lips, as he himself fled from the armies of king Saul, at the "Rock of Escape," and the caves of Engedi!
Some believe that this Psalm was actually written by Moses, even as Psalm 90 was, although the authorship is not certain. The plagues upon Egypt may have been fresh in Moses mind, when-or if-he did write the Psalm. And the steady hand of God, and His deliverance through the Red Sea, and from attacking armies, may have also inspired the Psalm. And where did God lead Moses and ancient Israel? To Petra!
Whatever the background to the Psalm, it clearly is a timeless reference to the loving providence of God who will always provide special protection for His loved ones, who trust in Him! The real question, each one of us will have to answer for himself, is, "Am I watching and praying daily, so that I may be accounted worthy to escape all the horrors to come?" "Am I trusting in God to deliver me, rather than human plans or man-made ideas?"
"Am I looking to God as my protection, my shelter, my refuge, my ultimate place of hiding and safety?"
God is the One we must look to. For no matter where the chosen place of safety is, or when we flee, unless God takes us there, it will either be the wrong place, or else we will go there either too early, or too late!

editors comments. The article you have just read was handed to the editor by a Countdown reader and only a few comments have been added. Conclusions are that the first place of safety was the British Isles to which Jeremiah escaped with the Stone of Destiny or Bethel Stone. The second one was Petra to which the early Christians escaped and then onto the British Isles and the third will be Petra Rev 12:14 where the Church of God will be given two wings of a great eagle (lifted into?) because the elect are fleeing persecution from the Red Dragon. For most people like the editor, Lawrence of Arabia is a person who inhabited the film that was made world famous. But Lawrence made Petra his base of operations and from its protecting mountains harried German and Turkish supply bases and railways in the Arabia. Dressed in ragged clothes and using primitive weapons. Lawrence's forces successfully defended Petra. The battle exhibited the skilful military tactics Lawrence used in wiping out nearly 1000 enemy troops in the Siq at a loss of only 28 Arabs killed and wounded; a battle that turned the tide of war in favour of the British.
Thwarted by Lawrence and his irregular Arab forces, the Germans ordered a total campaign against Lawrence. They directed several columns of troops, supported by German air planes, to converge on Petra. The outcome of the ensuing battle is one of the most colourful and romantic episodes of the war in the Land of the Arabian nights. In the rose red sit, half as old as time, Lawrence the archaeologist and Lawrence the military genius merged into one. The battle took place on October 21, 1917, shortly after the fall of Akaba

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: and she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she bought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
And the woman fled into the wilderness,(escape of first Christians) where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was there a place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhibiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth he hath but a short time.
And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman(the church)? which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, (those left in tribulation-Jacob's trouble) which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
SPECULATION from a Christian point of view.
In time sequence the "woman" in Rev.12 1 is the God being that became the logos, he is after all, the church. Originally the logos and the being that became the father wanted to have children. Write for our article WHY SEX. Their first offspring Lucifer went wrong and became what we now know to be Satan the god of this world. So the Logos still "pained" to be delivered of a child that they could love. Much like any married couple would in the human flesh.
Satan is the red dragon that knew he made the wrong choice and took a third part of the angels with him hoping to take over the entire universe. This resulted in a war in the third heaven and atomic war on earth with the destruction of all flesh. Write for our free article "Atomic war has happened before". This happened in the pre-Adamic period.
The logos then creates new flesh in Adam and Mary Magdalene becomes the woman in Rev. 12:4. The red dragon occupying Herod is ready to destroy Christ her man child offspring that "WAS TO" yet future, rule all nations with a rod of iron. The church which Christ built then flees into the wilderness (the British isles)
The WAR in heaven Rev.12:7 is the final war in heaven about to happen. Satan realises that Gods purpose is going forward and has one last go at unseating the Universal Power Centre.
The Comet, Hale Bob was discovered by two amateur astronomers, Mistress Hale and Mr. Bob on the same evening. They made the announcements to Bryan Marrs at the central telegraph. The comet Hale Bob, it's discovery was announced to the world on July 23, 1995. This is an event that we do have photographs of, we can substantiate this event, even though one of the two gentlemen, I won't identify because I had been advised he's being very careful, denies that this event occurred.
On July 23, exactly one year later to the date, on July 23, 1996 the comet Hale Bob splits into two separate bodies. It rejoined itself within about an hour or so. Now spectre graphic analysis of the photographs shows two very distinct bodies. This is not refraction, this is not reflection, this is not some sort of anomaly of fight. The analysis of the photograph shows two separate and distinct bodies for approximately one hour.
Here's another fascinating fact, on the 23 of March 1997 comet Hale Bob will be at it's closest point to earth, it will be 123,000,000 miles from earth. They have now taken the trajectory of Hale Bob, they have followed it around the sun, it's now heading back in our direction. The projected future return, the orbital return of Hale Bob will be 2364 years from now.
Now listen to the coincidences, July 23 it's discovered, on July 23 a year later it splits in two, does something that has never been witnessed, the astronomers were going crazy trying to explain it. On March the 23 it's at it's closest point to earth, it's 123,000,000 miles from earth. The orbital return is 2300 plus years. We came across another interesting little comet, Heyaku Taucki, at it's closest point to the sun, it is 23 astronomical units away. This occurred on May 1.
We're trying to figure out a pattern, why does this number 23 keep cropping up? Why does it appear that Hale Bob is tied in to this number 23? I have been spending a great deal of time on Hopi prophecy, and their interpretation. The surfacing of the comet Hale Bob last summer has really caught my attention because it is fulfilling many of the Hopi prophecies.
The Comet Hale Bob is significant in these prophecies. The prophecies generally say that when this long tail comet appears, that the fourth world, the era of the time cycle that we live in will come to an end. The long tale comet signalled the end of the fourth world. Prophecy suggested that Hale Bob is going to bring a change in our existence, in our time cycle.
Many of you may remember the birth of the white buffalo calf, this occurred in 1994. The prophecies in general, [this is across the board in the United States in Native American prophecies,] have always said that the birth of a white buffalo calf would mean that things are about to change, a new era, a new world is about to be born.
Now there have been white buffalo born in the past, but they were always male. One of the true signs, was that the white buffalo calf would have to be a female. A white buffalo female calf was born in 1994 on Sept. 22. Again heralding the close of an era. The white buffalo calf was the final sign in the closing of an era, and it occurred on the 22d.
This is the kind of information that is not subject to interpretation, there are far too many 23's in the existence of the comet Hale Bob, there are too many 23's throughout the history of our planet that signal the end of eras. Could it be a coincidence? Intellectually, I have to say yes it could be one massive coincidence. But the data coming in on Hale Bob continues, it continues to astound us.
I had been advised that there is a amateur astronomer in Houston Texas, he and some witnesses were looking at Hale Bob, they were monitoring the movement, and apparently, they estimate just what I have on my desk, is that 150,000 miles away from Hale Bob, there is a second dark body that has appeared. In other words Hale Bob seems to have a companion.
Now the way it has come in to me, I read this as, there was no apparent companion on the way into our solar system. It is possible that it was hidden in the tail, it is possible that we simply weren't told. But I am suspicious, there were far to many amateur astronomers watching to not have seen it.
My feeling is, and it is only that, that when it passed around the sun, it has apparently either picked up a companion that joined it on the other side, or we have an extraordinarily strange body who has decided to enter the solar system on the other end that Hale Bob did and some how it has connected itself with Hale Bob, which is virtually impossible. Because the data I have, suggest that it is four times the size of earth, it has no tail, and it has something around it that looks like the rings of Saturn. This could be it's own debris field or maybe vessels.
This gentleman says, "it is not reflecting the sun, it is giving off light of it's own. It appears in someway to be encircled by something, whether it's rocks, debris or other ships, we don't know."
But what was amazing was it is four times the size of the earth. We have to wonder where did this guy come from where did this body join up with Hale Bob, and why. Folks if this doesn't get you disturbed and upset, why aren't we being told?
There are several Hopi prophecies, here is their background. The Hopi people are an Indian people who live in approximately the four corners, Northeastern Arizona. The Hopi people have probably had more books and magazine articles written about them, because of their philosophy, and their way of life, and now I would suggest, because of the prophecies.
There are many prophecies, but there is one in general that tying in with biblical prophecy caught my attention, it's the prophecy that talks about the return of the Great White Brother, some times known as Bahana (?) Many people have often times quoted the prophecy that says "when Bahana, the Great White Brother returns, that according to Hopi tradition, the fourth world, the time cycle that we live in, will come to an close. It will be over, things will change. It is not necessarily a prophecy of gloom and doom, it does have some qualifying factors to it. In other words there could be a way out of the predicament, the ways out are explained very carefully.
The Great White Brother's arrival will be signalled just prior to by the arrival of a long tailed comet. Now it has many names in Hopi prophecy. I have personal dubbed it the 'blue star'. The blue star figure has been identified by Hopi tradition in prophecy as a comet with an extremely long tail, it is longer than the tail of any of the other star figure of the star spirits that the Hopi acknowledge.
Comet Hale Bob is fulfilling virtually every single aspect of the prophecy almost to a tee. Part of the prophecy suggest that there will be two twin comets that precede the long tailed spirit. So one of the ways in which we can recognize whether or not Hale Bob is of the comet of prophecy, the fulfiller of prophecy, is if it is proceeded by two twin comets.
Now initially my feeling was that the comet Hiyacoo Tacee (?) was one of the original twins, and that sometime between Hiyacoo Tacee and Hale Bob there would be a second bright comet in the sky, the twin of Hiyacoo Tacee. Now what was fascinating, and here's another one of those extraordinary coincidence, that on April I of 1996 Comet Hiyacoo Tacee was in almost exactly the same position that comet Hale Bob will be on April 1, 1997. So again we have another comet that is within one year to the date, is acting like Hale Bob. At first I honestly thought comet Hiyacoo Tacee was very likely one of the twins.
But on July 23/96 comet Hale Bob split into two twin comets, it fulfilled it's own prophecy. Which means if it is the comet of prophecy then according to the rest of the
story in the Hopi legend approximately seven years later, the Great White Companion will arrive. And according to the prophecy that is the time in which all things will change. The earth, the land changes, the way we see the stars, existence on the planet itself
One of the symbols of the Blue Star figure of the comet of prophecy, it suggest that on the face of the comet will be a large four armed star. I can easily see believers, the Christian believers looking at it and seeing the cross itself. We just recently completed a tape and an hour and half program that we recorded and we provide the documentation and the drawings to show that comet Hale Bob very likely has a cross on the face.
There's going to be an x on there, and I'm probably sure why they are not showing the photographs. But it could very easily tie in with biblical prophecy. I'm saying they're probably both right. And that if the Hopi prophecy is accurate, and if Hale Bob is the comet of prophecy, in the year 2004 we will probably see some major changes in our solar system on our planet and in the way we see life itself, the way we live life.

What was fascinating again we recently received another communication from a gentleman who has connections with NASA and he says in fact Hubble has picked up a second large dark body that is headed into our solar system, apparently at this point it is still outside of our solar system. And it's estimated time of arrival is from six to ten years. Which means anywhere from the year 2003 to 2010, that is well, well within the range of what we're suggesting, the year 2004.
1 am not an alarmist. I am not trying to preach doom and gloom but I am trying to suggest to the people of this planet that the ancient ones knew what they were talking about. A lot of people think that prophecy has to do with psychic powers and abilities, etc... It's not. It's about seeing a pattern and being able to predict it. The simplest analogy 2, 4, 6, 8, what's the next number? 10 that's prophecy,
What is most significant for us is that the Hopi prophecies are spelling out very clearly the series of events. The prophecy suggests number one, that we're going to have two twin stars that precede the comet of prophecy, again I am persuaded that the comet Hale Bob has fulfilled it's own prophecy, it has become it's own twin. The Great White Companion, now that's the literal translation of the word, but many of the Hopi elders today interpret it as the Great White Brother.
There is an aspect of the prophecy which says, "that when the Great White One i.e. Christ appears, he will be accompanied by a companion itself. This companion will be recognized because it has a red cloak." Which I interpret as meaning there will be some sort of a red or a red glow, there will be something red about this companion. In other words assuming
that prophecy points to Hale Bob and assuming that we have a seven year lag, in the year 2004 I am suggesting that there will be a white comet larger than Hale Bob that will be accompanied by some sort of- probable a red comet. And this second figure that accompanies the Great White Companion is known in the legend as the `purifier.'
Now the purifier is in essence the Sergeant at arms, he's the enforcer. If on the arrival of the Great White Brother, Companion, if the people of planet earth do not return to the old ways, if they do not follow the promises that were made generations ago by our own elders, then the Great White Companion will unleash the purifier. This purifier will then completely clean the earth of those who have fallen to the wayside.
Now the legend is very clear in what it says it is going to do. For example the legend says the prophecy says, if humans continue to indulge in adultery, if they continue to pursue vices, if they do not return to the land, if they don't live up to the promises of old, then we're all going to suffer. The legend basically says, if we don't return to the old ways, that the Purifier will descend on the earth and will eliminate anybody that does not follow the tradition.
