Give us the answer to that and we might have a clue to where we are going. A --BIG BANG -- that's what some would haave us believe.
The idea behind the big bang is that all life started from a gigantic explosion, then we all came crawling out from primeval soup gradually over millions of years we developed into monkeys; and that there is no god.
Well for people who don't want to think too much about it, it seems a reasonable explanation after all isn't the universe expanding at the moment? well so we are told--by the experts! but just for a few seconds let's toss a few ideas into the chat.
Let's get just a little bit more Scientific.
To have a big bang in the first place we need to have a mass of material, plus a colossal energy source to explode it. So we have two concepts here; mass and energy.
The first law of thermodynamics states that energy can neither be created or destroyed only changed from one state to another. From the big bang theory point of view there is a contradiction here, as we will see later.
Now assuming that we have got a very dense mass of material in the first place (about a foot in diameter! why not, we have to start somewhere) and that being in outer space it is a very cold mass indeed. To explode this dense mass we have got to have an energy source so bright that it is millions of times brighter than the sun with an enormous heat content.
Now logic tells me that when I look up into the sky at night, that out there, is a mass of energy in the form of stars. Suns like our own but a whole lot bigger.
This energy did not create itself or it would be a god in its own right. The sun does not talk to us or it would show itself as being a god. This is also where the first law of thermodynamics is false because the original energy; the vast wattage; or Joules of energy is of such a large figure that human beings simply can't put a figure to it, this energy just could not bring itself into existence.
Our very dense mass like wise, did not create itself. The mass did not self destruct or that would be a self destructing god; a contradiction in terms.
To summarise so far, we have two ideas for our big bang. Mass (to make up the material of our universe) and Energy (to get this mass from its first state to the larger expanded structure). Plus a problem. The mass is not a self existing god and the energy is not self existing either.
The mass did not bring itself into existence-to say that it has always been there makes the mass a self existing god-a little foolish.
The heat energy to explode the mass did not bring itself into existence, to say that it has always been there makes the heat energy a self existing god-again a little foolish.
Lastly why have a big bang in the first place. Did the mass and energy decide in their own minds? we will have a big bang just by "happenstance". Or was there an orderly mind in the background that had total control over the whole thing in the first place. Lets call it a God.
